In 2008, I began searching for barn design ideas that would complement the old (216+ years) Georgian Colonial house that we own in Gardner, MA. The house is also on the National Historic Register so keeping another structure in tone with it was important to us. After numerous website searches, we decided on a 24 X 36 design kit offered by a company called Country Carpenters located in Hebron, CT (approximately 2 hours away). I drove to their site and spent several hours with their staff modifying the type of pre-cut structure that I wanted. But before ordering it, I needed to decide on a builder to act as my general contractor.

I had seen some work done by David Gagnon and decided to approach him regards the project. David was impressive from the first meeting. We discussed the design and materials involved with the kit. He freely admitted that he never built a post and beam structure and that he wanted to talk with Country Carpenters before considering taking the job. He then drove to Hebron and spent the day with the designers. I was pleased when he accepted the challenge.

From start to finish, his attention to detail and innovative solutions to challenges faced on the site were exceptional. He always sought guidance from us when faced with an issue that could affect the build and always made recommendations for possible solutions. While any post and beam kit is rough by design, he applied his considerable finish carpenter skills to the project. As a result, the barn is a masterpiece of construction. He enhanced an excellent product with his knowledge of construction, his eye for detail and his personal drive for perfection. It was evident early on that I needed to give him only one piece of guidance do what you would do if this was your own building.

I wouldn’t hesitate for one moment in hiring David to do my next project. He never took shortcuts and always delivered the highest quality of work. In addition, he demanded the same of the work he subcontracted out (foundation, cement floor, electrical, etc). In short, Gagnon Construction provided a quality product that would be hard to match. We started the project in April 09 and it was finish by Sep. Others may have done it quicker, but none that I know could have done it better!

As a result of this work, I asked David to be on site as we began a restoration of the exterior elements of our home prior to painting. This job required considerable fabrication and replacement of dentil and ornamentation work. As with any home of this age, there were numerous challenges. His work was simply superb. Anyone considering modifications or new structures will be pleased with the quality of his work.

Gagnon construction has done a variety of projects on my homes during the past 10 + years. They are easy to talk to with and have a great attitude when working with me, answering my questions and explaining things as needed. Also, they don’t mind me hanging over their shoulders when I feel the need. They are also happy to offer me guidance for the little jobs I can do on my own. They are both of high character and are the only contractors I would ever leave unattended in my house. Dave and/or Joe will always be there to do the work – they will never send a stranger to work in my home.
